Not green in colour, the term 'green oak' refers to oak timber that has been cut three to eighteen months after the tree has been felled. The wood is used without having been dried out or preserved. Green oak can be used for both interior and exterior jobs and as it hasn't been treated in any chemicals, it is also a more environmentally friendly option.
There is a lot of moisture in fresh green oak, so when it naturally air dries, the timber shrinks and becomes harder. This process can take many years, depending on the size of the wood. When used correctly green oak can create incredibly strong structures as, as the wood shrinks together, it forms a natural strong bond. The dried wood becomes a silvery aged tone. Green oak has fantastic longevity and rarely needs to be replaced.
